E. Wieden Solingen 1920s Mother
of Pearl, Abalone 2 Blade Pen knife Exc

            Exact
knife in photos.
Manufacturer was E. Wieden & Company,
Aktiengesellschaft of Ohligs, just west of the German knifemaking center of
Solingen. Main spear pattern blade obverse tang is stamped E. Wieden & Co,
A.G. / Ohligs - Solingen. Manufacturer of prestige items including knives from
1922 – 1932. 2 blade equal end pen knife. Chrome vanadium steel blades and
backspring; brass fob loop, liners and pins; genuine Mother of Pearl 3 piece
handle panels with Abalone inlays. 2 1/16 inches main spear pattern blade; 1
9/16 inch pen blade; 3 inches oal closed. Minimal wear, principally freckling
on the main blade’s tang that made its stamp difficult to decipher. We rate
Excellent condition, never used or sharpened, perhaps Near Mint, but photos
ought to suffice. Excellent backspring strength. The town of Ohligs, like
Solingen to its east, contained a sizeable Jewish business community prior to
Kristallnacht in 1933; many of the ethnic teutons did not participate in the
pogroms of the 1930s and 1940s. Whether Wieden of this company was Jewish is
beyond our capacity to answer; likewise any relationship between E. Wieden and
the Karl Wieden of Ohlig’s cigarette lighter company.
